TRC have been awarded the contract for the design, supply, and installation of over 300 fully glazed and factory finished timber heritage sash windows and heritage timber casement windows for the £300m renovation project at The Glebe in Chelsea.
Formation Architects, working in collaboration with Collett-Zarzycki and Gumuchdjian Architects, were appointed to create seven luxury dwellings and two villas within the retained walls of the former Jamahiriya School, situated on approximately one acre in Glebe Place. The surrounding architecture in Chelsea is an eclectic mix of different architectural styles and one of the major challenges for the architects was to conserve the character of The Glebe, whilst allowing this majestic development to sit gracefully and subtly into the neighbourhood.
The architecture of The Glebe is undeniably grand yet the purpose behind this renovation is to create luxury homes rather than an embassy! The generous high ceiling living spaces with landscaped gardens and urban courtyard gardens needed to offer comfortable and intimate family settings as well as providing areas for entertaining friends and important business associates. The building needed to evolve sensitively from a functional school to a set of luxury apartments. It needed a transformation from an old and slightly awkward building into a new elegant and sophisticated dwelling complex but without losing its character, integrity, or its connection to its rightful place in Chelsea’s story.
The existing brick facades were maintained and restored but the project also included extensive remodelling and extensions to the existing roofs of the school building. New lower ground floor and subterranean levels and two new build villas and a new gate house were constructed within the secluded grounds.
TRC’s proven track record in the design, supply and installation of “like for like” bespoke heritage windows and doors for many large and prestigious projects in Central London and across the UK, made them an outstanding choice for the contractor, Brookfield Multiplex.
TRC supplied and installed fully glazed and factory finished timber sash windows, heritage casement windows, and heritage doors. The heritage sash windows come with the classic traditional weight-and-pulley mechanism, and our heritage casement windows with inward or outward opening, side-hinged or top-hung.
Many of these windows were designed bespoke as “like for like” replacements to maintain the character of the buildings whilst offering the highest levels of thermal, weather and acoustic insulation. Our windows are supplied with individual Slim Line glass units and solid sash bars that create immaculate sight lines and also add an air of distinction to each window. We use premium range traditional glazing methods for our double glazed sash windows, with putty fronting as attention to detail and high levels are styling are essential, especially when delivering a renovation of this sophistication.
All of our ground-floor windows and doors supplied are also compliant to PAS24:2012 security standards and achieve Secured by Design accreditation, meaning the new owners can sleep safe and sound in the knowledge that their property is well protected against any attempts at illegal access.
The exciting details about this renovation are frankly staggering and offer a new level of super-luxury to each occupier of the apartments and villas. Each apartment will have its own swimming pool and private lift. The new tower is purported to contain a car elevator, enabling the seamless integration of cars into the building itself! This development promises to be one of the most sought after and one of the most exclusive addresses in London and we are absolutely delighted to have contributed our windows, doors and expertise.
