Bow Quarter is a unique East London development that encompasses 714 apartments across seven buildings, with several structures forming part of the historic Bryant and May match factory. This iconic site employed over 3,000 women and girls at its peak and witnessed significant historical events, including the Match Girls’ Strike of 1888, which led to the establishment of Britain’s first women’s trade union. The factory also pioneered some of the earliest welfare institutions for industrial workers in Britain.
After closing in 1979, the factory fell into disrepair until developers launched one of East London’s first urban renewal projects in 1988. The Park Buildings were subsequently added in the mid-1990s following the factory building’s redevelopment. In recent years, the timber windows in these buildings had deteriorated significantly, becoming draughty and requiring comprehensive refurbishment.
The project
Clarks Construction sought to enhance the windows’ security, energy efficiency, and aesthetic appeal while reducing ongoing maintenance costs. A key priority was minimising disruption to residents throughout the refurbishment process.
TRC Contracts was appointed to execute the refurbishment works, bringing our extensive expertise in timber window restoration. Our comprehensive approach incorporates advanced techniques, including the specialist Repair Care resin system.
This system offers a non-invasive solution for window restoration, eliminating the need for window removal. This innovative system involves applying specialist resin to damaged areas, which solidifies to create robust, long-lasting repairs across a wide range of decay types.
The original windows featured timber beads with rubber glazing seals. During restoration, TRC Contracts replaced deteriorated glazing beads where necessary and upgraded all seals with modern putty alternatives. These contemporary materials offer superior durability and enhanced weather protection compared to traditional putty.
Project Implementation
TRC Contracts initiated the project with a comprehensive window survey, evaluating each unit’s condition to develop tailored refurbishment specifications. This methodical approach ensured an efficient, systematic restoration process.
Our team executed repairs on individual windows sequentially, beginning with the removal of decayed timber and thorough frame cleaning. TRC’s skilled craftsmen then applied the Repair Care resin system to restore compromised areas, ensuring structural integrity.
Following successful timber repairs, new glazing beads were fitted and secured using modern putty alternatives to enhance weatherproofing. The process concluded with a professional paint finish to match the existing aesthetic, seamlessly integrating the restored windows with the building’s appearance.
