Need an urgent response?
The former Babergh District Council offices in Hadleigh, Suffolk, are a historically significant site undergoing redevelopment into a residential community known as Bowlers Croft. The site features a unique blend of architectural heritage, including five listed buildings, historic maltings, and a former industrial gasworks, all set within a designated conservation area. Given its rich history and sensitive location, the redevelopment aims to preserve and enhance the original structures while introducing much-needed housing to the area. In addition to the heritage buildings, the site also includes a larger, modern office block, reflecting its evolution over time.
The project
The project involved the careful replacement and restoration of timber casement windows across both listed and non-listed buildings within the former Babergh District Council offices. TRC Contracts were tasked with manufacturing and installing 70 Heritage casement windows and 90 traditional casement windows, ensuring they met the strict conservation requirements while enhancing thermal performance and longevity.
The refurbishment of existing windows required meticulous craftsmanship to retain the site’s historical character, with repairs carried out using traditional joinery techniques. Given the conservation area status and the presence of Grade I and II listed buildings, every aspect of the work had to align with heritage guidelines, ensuring that the new and restored windows seamlessly blended with the architectural integrity of the site. The project was completed within a five-month timeframe, contributing to the transformation of the former council offices into high-quality residential dwellings.
