Electra House, located at 84 Moorgate, London, is a historic Grade II listed building designed by renowned architect John Belcher and completed in 1903. Originally serving as the administrative headquarters for the Eastern Telegraph Company, it played a crucial role in global communications. During World War II, the building became a centre for covert operations, with Department EH secretly monitoring foreign embassy communications. Though it suffered severe bomb damage, it was repaired in 1944 and later became the City of London College, now part of London Metropolitan University.

Moorgate

The project

TRC Contracts carried out a comprehensive window refurbishment at Electra House, carefully restoring its diverse range of historic windows. This included circular high-level dome windows, traditional double-hung sash windows, and bespoke metal-framed windows set within the building’s stone arch façade. The project involved multiple surveys to assess the condition of the windows, followed by specialist repairs using Repair Care for timber restoration and Draftfix draughtproofing for improved insulation.

Damaged glass was replaced with historically appropriate glazing, while missing and deteriorated ironmongery was custom-made to match the building’s original fittings. Over a two-year period, TRC meticulously restored the windows, ensuring both heritage preservation and modern performance improvements.

The restored sash and metal-framed windows now operate smoothly, offering better insulation, weatherproofing, and draughtproofing without compromising their original aesthetic.

The careful replication of bespoke ironmongery ensures that every window maintains its authentic detailing, blending seamlessly with the building’s architecture. This transformation not only improves the visual appeal of this Grade II listed landmark but also creates a more comfortable environment for those who work and study within, preserving its legacy for years to come.
