The Selfridges building was one of the first uses of steel structure in building and influenced much of the legislation that needed to be introduced and updated to accommodate it. Selfridges is five stories high and consists of three basement levels, providing 540,000 sq ft of selling space.
The Oxford Street and Duke Street frontages are made up of more glass than stone or iron, meaning windows form a large and important part of this historic building.
When a new restaurant was planned, some of the building’s famous bronze-framed windows – some as tall as eight metres – needed to be restored and adapted. With our specialist expertise, construction managers Sir Robert McAlpine commissioned TRC to undertake the six-week contract to complete a sash window restoration.
Due to the busy location, and to prevent inconvenience to customers, most of the sash window restoration took place at night. Using specialist equipment, we cleaned and repaired the bronze frames and timber subframes, and painted the frames with a specially selected metal paint. We removed the existing glass, replaced the seals and installed new, white 15mm laminated glazing. Ironmongery was refurbished, and new smoke vent actuators were installed.
Our sash window restoration allows for historic windows such as these to live on and continue to contribute to the authentic period style of the time, to complement the building adequately. Our restoration services allow us to repair any damages to the timber and prevent any unfixable damage. It allows classic windows to look as good as the day they were installed, to be enjoyed by countless generations to come.
Our team of skilled craftsman can also help to make these windows draughtproof or double glazed where possible to aid in the energy efficiency of the building to reduce running costs without compromising on historic design.
