The Star and Garter

Richmond Hill, London
This breathtaking Grade II listed building at the top of Richmond Hill dates back to 1924. Originally a military hospital designed by Sir Edwin Cooper, it housed the Star & Garter charity for nursing and dementia care until 2014, when the charity sold it to move to purpose-built premises.

This breathtaking Grade II listed building at the top of Richmond Hill dates back to 1924. Originally a military hospital designed by Sir Edwin Cooper, it housed the Star & Garter charity for nursing and dementia care until 2014, when the charity sold it to move to purpose-built premises.

The name lives on, but today’s Star and Garter has undergone a stunning transformation into luxury apartments by developer London Square, under the architectural direction of PDP London.

The Star and Garter case study

TRC was commissioned in December 2015 to begin a 34-month sash window restoration project to refurbish the 850 sash windows, over 40 pairs of French doors, and 30 replacement identical sash windows, so they perform to expectations in such a high-end building, while retaining their heritage characteristics.

We also restored over 40 pairs of French doors.

Some new windows and timber doors were also required where the existing were beyond economical repair, so our sister brand TRC Windows supplied and installed 30 replacement identical sash windows to the main building.

TRC also designed, supplied and installed over 200 new aluminium clad windows for an additional new building in the grounds. This included design to the developer’s requirements, producing prototypes to obtain planning approval, production, and installation by TRC’s own employed team of professional window installers.

We also provided bespoke ironmongery, supplying and installing replica brass glazing bars to the fire screens in the main entrance foyer.
